Scheduled Maintenance, Explained

ITDS Scheduled Maintenance covers the critical points of Server and Workstation performance.  We have a 14 point check list that we use for every network PC and Server.

  1. We verify the battery unit connected to the server or workstation reports the battery is good.  This is usually verifying that there are no red lights on the battery.
  2. We verify network settings of servers and workstation with static IP configured.  This verification only occurs periodically to make sure that all the servers that are referenced are correct.
  3. We run the Microsoft utility called Disk Cleanup.  This utility purges temporary files from the Server or Workstation to free disk space as well as reduce the ability of spy ware to run from these locations.
  4. We verify that the hard drive is running at its optimum level.  This means that we check to make sure that the files stored on the hard drives are continuous and are able to be quickly loaded by the server or workstation.  We have determined that this optimum level is less than 4% File Fragmentation.  If it is above that, we defragment the drive.
  5. We verify that all the services that are set to startup with windows have actually started.  We note when these services have not started.  If possible we will start the services at this time.
  6. Microsoft Operating Systems require that they have at least 10% free space available on the Hard Drive.  We verify that Windows has the free space that it needs to behave properly.
  7. We verify that your anti-spy ware application is up to date with its definitions.  This is critical because when it comes to spy ware the application can only remove what it knows. It only knows about what the latest update informs it about.
  8. We verify that your anti-virus is up to date.  This is just as important as the anti-spy ware as Viruses are purposefully intended to disrupt the stability of any computer system and cause it to crash.
  9. We check the entries of the Application Log looking for critical errors.  We inform you by noting the basics of the error on the paperwork.
  10. We check the entries of the System Log looking for critical errors.  We inform you by noting the basics of the error on the paperwork.
  11. We check the entries of the Security Log looking for numerous failed attempts to logon. This is the clue to someone trying a brute force hack to gain access to your network.  We inform you by noting the error on the paperwork.
  12. We check the log of the anti-virus program.  This is periodic check as we will find if it is needed by examining the application log.
  13. We verify that the Server or Workstation is current with the Updates issued by Microsoft.  This is a vital process as Microsoft closes security holes and increases the compatibility of Windows based Operating Systems.
  14. We verify that the data backup has been occurring.  If a configuration change is required we will make that change during the process of checking the logs.

To correct issues that are found is NOT a part of the maintenance plan.  After you’re advised, you will have the option to either have us implement the corrective action or if you feel it is not vital, to not correct the problem. The corrective action may have to be scheduled for another time, perhaps due to downtime or perhaps due to the technician’s schedule.
